It’s important to plan for your family’s financial security in case the unexpected happens. That’s why the City provides employees with Basic Life insurance and Basic Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance – at no cost to you.

You can also choose to buy Optional Life insurance for yourself and your family through easy payroll deductions.

Optional Life & AD&D

You can purchase additional life and AD&D insurance for yourself, as well as coverage for your spouse/domestic partner and your child(ren). You pay the full cost of any Optional Life insurance and/or Optional AD&D insurance coverage. If you want this additional coverage for yourself, you must enroll on the eCHRIS Self-Service website.

Employee coverage maximum is $500,000

  • Employee coverage is available in $10,000 increments up to $250,000, and in $50,000 increments from $250,000 to $500,000.
  • You may add $10,000 or $20,000 to your coverage each year during Open Enrollment until the total Optional Life insurance coverage reaches $150,000.
  • Underwriting is required if you want to increase your Optional Life insurance by more than $20,000, or want to increase the total to over $150,000.

Child coverage amounts are $10,000, $15,000, $20,000, or $25,000

  • No Evidence of Insurability is required for child coverage.
  • If you wish to cancel your optional life insurance for children, you may do so anytime using eCHRIS Self-Service.

Spouse or qualified domestic partner maximum coverage is $300,000

  • Rates are based on the spouse or qualified domestic partner’s age.
  • You cannot increase spouse coverage using eCHRIS Self-Service.
  • Spouse or qualified domestic partner coverage is available in $10,000 increments up to $300,000.
  • For the first 31 days after hire, you can elect up to $50,000 of spouse/qualified domestic partner coverage with no underwriting requirement.
  • During Open Enrollment or due to a life event, if you already have $10,000, $20,000, $30,000, or $40,000 in spouse/qualified domestic partner life insurance, you may elect up to $50,000 without Evidence of Insurability.
  • All other requests for spouse/qualified domestic partner coverage are subject to underwriting, and you must go through the online Evidence of Insurability (EOI) process with Minnesota Life.
